AFRO NATION: THE WORLD’S BIGGEST AFROBEATS FESTIVAL COMES TO DETROIT

TRADITIONAL PR | MEDIA RELATIONS

Afro Nation, the biggest Afrobeats celebration in the world founded by Nigerian creative industry entrepreneurs Obi Asika, and Smade, in association with BBC 1 Xtra was coming to Detroit, the largest African American City and home of Motown for its second United States stop.  The event that brings the biggest names in Afrobeats, Amapiano, Hip-Hop, R&B, and Dancehall unites the diaspora and delivers something culturally important to a hugely underserved audience wanted to get the word out in one of the most underserved cities. The two day festival tapped Love Publicity as local PR agency of record to assist with getting the word out via media and community relations.

Months in advance, we worked with festival organizers to determine the  highlights, storylines and angles to develop our strategic approach. We started with an announcement followed by a short media run on what to expect in July and again a press run in August leading up to the big festival. We also connected with local business owners, influencers, nonprofits, and media across the city to keep the community engaged. .

Love Publicity spread love across Metro-Detroit securing significant interviews on every single news station, radio station, newspaper, and community blog across Detroit. In addition we connected with influencers focused on lifestyle, fashion, food, and events to assist with getting the buzz out. Our efforts were also placed on community impact as we connected with nonprofits, first responders and small business owners to partner with Afro Nation. We also assisted with government affairs, securing a private meeting with the mayor to discuss the impact of this huge festival being a part of Detroit and coordinating with the city council to present the organizers with a Spirit of Detroit Award and Mayor’s Declaration Award.
